Full disclosure: Mountains2Metal sent me this shelf to test before it was available for purchase. There were no expectations for a review or content, there’s no affiliate link, and this isn’t sponsored. It’s just an honest review of a piece of gear that’s made a big, positive impact for our family.

The Mountains2Metal Flip Down Attic Shelf turns the dead space under the hardtop, above your cargo area, into storage you’d never know you had. It keeps gear secure and out of the way, yet it’s easy to reach even when the back of the Jeep is loaded up. We’ve run it on Clifford for a year of family trips, and the short version is this: no drawbacks, only positives.

How it works: release the latches and the loaded shelf swings down from the hardtop.

The quick verdict

Pros

  • Space you didn’t know you had. It uses the empty area under the hardtop, so it takes nothing away from passengers or cargo.
  • Easy to reach, even loaded. Open the tailgate, drop the shelf, grab what you need. No unpacking the back.
  • Zero rattles. Fit and finish are flawless, and it’s dead quiet on washboard.
  • Holds up to 50 lbs. That’s a lot of capacity for this space, plenty for an air kit, camp gear and more.
  • MOLLE-slotted underside for hanging extra gear where you can reach it.
  • Simple install. A few bolts into factory holes, and everything you need is in the box.
  • Doesn’t block your view when it’s latched up.

Worth knowing

  • JKU and hardtop only. It doesn’t fit 2-door JKs or soft tops.
  • Top off, gear exposed. When the hardtop comes off for summer, nothing covers what’s on the shelf. The upside: thanks to the MOLLE design, you can strap gear right to it, so it stays secure even with the top off.
Mountains2Metal attic shelf lowered and loaded with a MORRFlate air kit, camping gear and a first aid kit in a Jeep JKU
Lowered and loaded: our MORRFlate air kit, miscellaneous camping gear and a first aid kit. All things we want within easy reach that would otherwise be loose in the cabin.

What we keep up there

Traveling as a family out of a JKU, every inch of storage counts. The attic holds the gear we need often but don’t want rattling around in the cargo area:

  • MORRFlate air kit for airing back up after the trail.
  • Camera equipment, kept secure and out of the kids’ way.
  • Taruca swivel chairs, ready the moment we pull into camp.

On the MOLLE underside we hang one of our first aid kits and a fire extinguisher. When the shelf is latched up, both are right there at the tailgate, so you can reach them fast without digging.

Install

Installation is just a few bolts into the factory holes, and everything you need is included. Mountains2Metal’s tip for lowering it: release one latch, hold the shelf with your free hand, then release the second latch and guide it down to the bump stops. Don’t pop both latches at once with a load on it.

Who it’s for

If you travel out of a JKU with a hardtop, especially with family, this is one of the best storage and organization upgrades you can make. It frees up the cargo area for the big stuff and gives the small, often-used gear a home that’s secure, quiet and easy to reach.

If anything, I just wish we’d had it sooner.
